Updating the Powder Room : Round 2

I’ve never been 100% pleased with our powder room (the only bathroom on the main level of our house), even after the updates we did in 2017. I knew it wasn’t “finished” and it was just asking for more. So I gave that little powder room what it asked for.

Recap

This is how the bathroom looked when we moved into our house in September 2017. Everything was builder-grade and original from when the house was built in 1997. The bathroom is directly between our front entry and kitchen, so it’s highly visible.

We had the entire house painted that fall and this room was painted Polar Bear by Behr. We replaced the sink, mirror, light, TP holder and called it a day. In May of 2018, the tile floor was ripped out and replaced with the hickory hardwood when the rest of the main level was done. The bathroom has sat like this ever since. Other than requesting art to be hung up, my husband was fine with the room. I was not.

Today

I was getting near the end of my maternity leave in December and basically couldn’t stand looking at the room any more. Maybe that’s what happens when you’re at home for 16 weeks? I knew it wouldn’t take much to change the room, but it needed to be done.

I love dark and bold powder rooms. I feel like they’re the perfect space to do something fun or a little different than the rest of your home. I originally wanted to wallpaper it, but having to take the sink out of the room for the third time was not ideal so I moved on to paint. After doing some “research” on Pinterest and testing out paint samples, I picked Benjamin Moore Soot. It was the perfect navy-black. This inspiration photo sealed the deal for me.

So during the last two days of my maternity leave, I painted the room and planned a gallery wall. I ordered six prints from various online sources and some frames from Target. I love how this simple update makes such a big difference to the space.

We moved the toilet paper roll to directly across the toilet vs right next to it. I think the tiny wall there is a perfect spot. I keep a little lidded basket directly below it with two backup rolls. We also decided to add a hook to the back of the door for the towel instead of drilling one into the wall next to the sink – that felt too crowded.

I love how this little space has transformed over the years. Baby steps, but it has really helped bring more life to the main level of our home.
