Flam Railway

Our third and final day of the fjord cruise was actually spent on a train. The Flam Railway, part of Flamsbana, leaves Flam and travels along the Aurlandsfjord and stops at the mountain top Myrdal Station before continuing on to other destinations. It take a little over an hour and a lot of people take the return trip back to Flam. The ride has been named one of the most scenic train rides in Europe. And it was–the landscape was gorgeous! You see the fjord valley, waterfalls, go through tunnels and stop at a couple points for photos. Though I have only seen one Harry Potter movie, the first leg of the train ride gave me Harry Potter vibes. It also reminded me a bit of Switzerland, but it was so different at the same time.

Travel Tip! For the journey from Flam to Myrdal, try to grab a seat in the last train car and sit on the right side so you’re facing forwards. Though both sides of the train provide stunning views, most of them will be on the right side.

The second leg of our train journey was on to our final destination of the trip—Oslo! Traveling from Myrdal to Oslo was also pretty incredible to see because the landscape was so different than what we had just traveled through. We were so high up in the mountains, that we were above the snowmelt and waterfalls. It felt so remote and almost like a different country. (I honestly don’t know how people would get around during the winter in this part of the country!) Though the train ride from Flam to Oslo took a good amount of time (more than 5 hrs total), it was actually a highlight for me. Just bring snacks for the train ride 😉
