My BFF Got Married & My Maid of Honor Speech

My best friend Chelsea got married this past weekend. Saturday was full of love, happy tears and celebrating. Chels looked stunning and her new husband was quite handsome as well. We lucked out with beautiful weather—thankfully it didn’t start raining until the evening during the reception.

Since I was the Married Maid (or Matron) of Honor, I was only able to snap a few photos. I’m so excited to see all of the professional ones—the few that’s been posted turned out amazing.

Of course, the most nerve-racking part of the day for was when I had to give my speech. I felt like I was shaking during the whole thing (hopefully no one noticed). I wanted the speech to be light-hearted because I knew how emotional the day was going to be. In the end I got the few laughs I was hoping for.

Good evening everyone. I just want to start off by thanking everyone that has helped make today so lovely. I know Adam and Chelsea both love and appreciate all of you.

My name is Megan and Chelsea is my best friend. Chelsea and I met on one of the first days of school during our junior year of college. I walked into one of our design classes and here is this blonde-haired girl sitting at a table with her laptop. My first thought was “Who is this girl?” It didn’t take long for Chelsea’s contagious smile and bubbly personality for me to go from “where did this girl come from?” to “why have we not been friends our whole lives?”

Since that first day we met roughly five years ago, I don’t think a single major life event has happened that we didn’t share with each other. Sure, we’ve had to keep a few secrets from each other, but it was never long until we were allowed to spills the beans to each other. Do you realize how hard it is to not tell your best friend that her boyfriend would soon be proposing? Chelsea has been my partner in crime, and the keeper of all my embarrassing secrets…which actually aren’t that secretive because she loves telling those stories whenever she gets a chance.

She’s been one of the most loyal friends I’ve ever had and will stick by you through life’s up and downs. She’s the type of person that will let you raid her closet when you need something to wear, will stay on the phone all night with you if you need her to, and forces you to watch Twilight against your will.

I knew something was different after Chelsea and Adam first met. She seemed happier than I had ever seen her and it was the first time she would not stop saying nice things about a boy.

Now, you see Adam, I have always considered Chelsea to be my other half. And I understand that you also need Chelsea to be your other half, but we can’t necessarily split Chelsea in half. So I have a solution to this…we can be thirds! So as a third of this newly formed partnership, I have some advice to give to the both of you.

First, allow each other to have some alone time. Chelsea, this means it’s okay that Adam can somehow spend seven hours playing 9 holes of golf. I honestly don’t know anyone who’s that slow, but trust me…let him take that long.

Second, be spontaneous: Don’t plan everything because some of the most exciting and memorable things happen when they’re not planned. Including babies.

Third, know each other’s boundaries: I know your house only has one bathroom, but Adam, this does not give you permission to go in and use the toilet while Chelsea is in the shower.

My final piece of advice is to never forget why you’re here with each other today and how far you’ve made it to be here. It’s no longer about your separate pasts, but it is now about your future life together. Embrace, celebrate, and love each other unconditionally.

So let’s raise our glasses to toast the newlyweds. Coming together is the beginning, keeping together is progress and working together is success. I hope that the both of you remember that love does not consist of gazing at each other but rather gazing together in the same direction.

Cheers.

Congrats to the newlyweds!

  1. I don’t know what else to say other than that I love you to pieces! I’m so happy you were there by my side, just like always. Thank you for keeping me calm, buying me cheez-its (because you knew I’d eat those) and making me laugh. Your speech was perfect, still gives me chills and makes me tear up. Love you, best! 🙂
